I caught most of Hellboy II: The Golden Army tonight. It was maybe about 10 minutes in when I flipped to it.
This movie is a feast for the eyes - the visuals are breathtaking at times. You could throw this on mute and still get a lot of enjoyment out of it. There are fantastical creatures all around, everywhere. Don't blink or you'll miss some crazy weird thing with 13 eyes. Our main character is a demon who shaves his horns. He works with a fish dude and a German creature made out of vapor. At one point there's a vicious forest god, and when he's killed, the essence of nature bleeds out of him and onto the streets of NYC...very cool.
The plot is certainly secondary - Hellboy defends humanity, but yet he never gains acceptance. Is he really on the right side? The prince of the fantasy world where all these creatures come from, which exists parallel to our world, gets pissed off and decides to murder his father and declare war on humanity. The titular Golden Army is an unstoppable force that the prince will use against us, if only he can recover the final piece of the magical gold crown held by his sister. The sister escapes and aligns with Hellboy and his crew, and we have our conflict. Also, Hellboy and the fish dude bond over their girl problems.
"You're in love, have a beer."
This definitely upped the ante from the first Hellboy, which I only thought was okay. This sequel is fun and pretty solidly entertaining, and worth seeing for the visuals alone.
