Best Coast + Wavves - Summer Is Forever
In the middle of another horrible New York winter, there are few sentiments I can behind more so than 'Summer Is Forever'. California groups Best Coast and Wavves are touring together, and as celebration they have released a split single under that title.
The single features one new song from each group, as well as a sampler track from each of their 2010 records, Best Coast's Crazy for You and Wavves' King of the Beach.
New Wavves cut "Stained Glass (Won't You Let Me Into Your Heart)" kinda sounds like Wavves doing a groovy MGMT song - what's there for me to not like?
New Best Coast tune "When You Wake Up" is super catchy - after a few listens, it has firmly lodged itself into my brain. "It's always 11:30...when you wake up."
The collection closes with "Hawaii", from tour openers No Joy. It's the first I've ever heard of the group, sounds pretty good.
Summer Is Forever is available now on iTunes.

Best Coast Debut Record
Crazy for You, the debut album from Best Coast, has been unleashed via the internet. Fucking finally. Feels like I started listening to Best Coast about a year ago, and here I am only listening to a full album from them today.
It's great, as I expected. Sunny rockin' tunes. Love the vocals. Subject matter (wish this person I love and have so much fun with and seems to love me would just be my significant other already) incredibly 'relevant' to my life right now.
Fits the description of a female Wavves, which is definitely a compliment coming from me. (If you don't know, this is kind of funny because Bethany Cosentino, frontwoman for Best Coast, is dating Nathan Williams, 'mastermind' of Wavves. It's like a 2k10 indie rock version of Kurt + Courtney, except not, because Bethany does not seem like a horrible, horrible person)
Incidentally, the new Wavves record King of the Beach really is like Nirvana's Nevermind, not to compare the two (no "Nirvana rulez, Wavves is gay!" responses necessary), in that there is a much cleaner production vs. the previous record (Bleach + Wavvves), and that production really highlights sweet pop rock tunes that can be enjoyed by a wider audience.
But back to Best Coast and Crazy for You...
It is not sunny at all, this Saturday morning in July (this could be taken as either good or bad, considering the recent heat wave we've been suffering through this week). But this record brought some sun to my bedroom.

Best Coast - Crazy for You
So many album detail announcements to catch up on, so little time. Best Coast are FINALLY releasing a proper album (I don't think I've ever started listening to a band and had nothing but a random assortment of MP3s to listen to for so long). It's called Crazy for You, and drops on July 27.
That's the album cover above. It's cute. We know Best Coast likes cats and California. It is strangely without any weed references.
Crazy for You tracklisting:
01) Boyfriend
02) Crazy for You
03) The End
04) Goodbye
05) Summer Mood
06) Our Deal
07) I Want To
08) When the Sun Don't Shine
09) Bratty B
10) Honey
11) Happy
12) Each and Everyday
Bonus Track: When I'm With You
Well this is a surprise! I totally thought this was gonna be one of those debut albums where you've heard half of the songs already, but that's not the case at all. Those are 12 brand new tracks. The only song I've heard is "When I'm With You", and it's been demoted to a 'bonus track'.

Best Coast
I'm fast becoming a fan of Best Coast, despite the fact that the band name is an affront against the region I call home (as in, West Coast is the best coast, yo).
Real name Bethany Cosentino, Best Coast are kind of like a female Wavves. Or if you don't know Wavves, think Beach Boys sunny melodies, but with a shitstorm of distortion and reverb.
Best Coast don't have an album yet, though they've released a number of 7" singles. So currently I just have an assortment of random songs of theirs on my iTunes. Enough to cobble together a makeshift album, if I wanted to do such a thing. In this interview with Free Williamsburg that I just read, Bethany says that a proper album is forthcoming in 2010. And she doesn't hate the East Coast, really. Great place to visit.
While we're waiting for the album to drop, check out some of these songs. How great is "Sun Was High (So Was I)" as a song title? Love it.
